If you’re trying to figure out who the guy playing 45s around Asheville is, there’s a good chance it’s me. I’m Whitney Shroyer — also known as Mr. Soul Motion — a lifelong record collector, music fan, and professional DJ. I’ve been playing records in Asheville for nearly twenty years, in bars, on the radio, and at weddings.

My history
I host a weekly radio show called In the Box on AshevilleFM, airing every Friday from 11 am to 1 pm. It’s a show about 45 RPM records of all types, and it’s been on the air since 2016. Before that, I produced The Replacement Party, which aired every Thursday from 9–11 pm on WPVM from 2004 to 2009.
During my Admiral and Replacement Party days, I worked under the name DJ Dr. Filth, a persona I borrowed from Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row.” Over the past ten years, I’ve been working as Mr. Soul Motion, a name that feels like a better fit for my energy and the joy I get from playing music.
Before all of that, I owned a record store called Whizz Records. It started in Missouri in 1993, moved to Asheville in 1998, and stayed open until 2003, when I sold it to pursue more creative ways of sharing my love of music.
Decades of DJing and working with music have taught me how to introduce people to new sounds while honoring the songs they already love, and how to recognize when it’s my job to move a crowd and when it’s better to support conversation and connection.
Outside of DJing, I also teach yoga classes each week at the studio my wife and I own together, PurnaYoga828.com.
